Get Lifted by john Legend waz hiz debut album that introduced the world to hiz soulful tunez. And waz also the another album that stood az the sound track to my life around 2004-05. I remember back in 2004 going to a Kanye west concert at Toad's place( back when college dropout debuted, u'll never see kanye play toads ever again!!!! he'z to big of a name now lol!) and the whole G.o.o.d Music crew waz out. Don C (kanye'z well dressed road manager) waz dj'ing for him. He had hiz other artish GlC with him. But what really had me waz they had thiz light skinned Gentleman at a key board singing the old Gospel song "I'll fly away"(it waz part of a small skit on Kanye'z college dropout). Well I waz impressed with hiz plaing and vocal skillz.

Befor the night waz over I had bought a few mix tapez, one being John legend live at the knitting factory. Which made me a true beleaver in John Legend'z vocal stylingz. For he offerd a sound that waz missing from the R&B world at the time. I mean ur talking about around the time Rapperz started taking it upon themselvez to sing their own hookz. By the time John Legend'z album dropped, it kind of brought the R&B game back to where it waz. But what waz missing? If u asked what had R&B at a stand still for a hot min, u'll get many answerz. but many feel the soul waz missing. Where at one point people were into the Neo Soul movement that waz spawned, many weren't trying to touch the subjectz of true feeling becauze it just didn't sell anymore.

Most of the true soulful artistz could only draw off their own fan basez instead of having a universal appeal that shootz them to the top of the chartz. So john legend had a different approach. And playing the piano and being able to sing made him a force to be reckoned with. I mean on hiz album, the intro just captivated the soul "come on and go with me, therez something new for u to see, i'll take u high," "once u take one hit of thiz, it will feel so good, u'll never want to quit". I could be here all night talking about hiz first album. It waz an R&B album that stayed at the top of the chartz for a while. It even won a few Grammy'z. It takez a lot of artistz yearz befor they start winning Awardz period. But to come out the gate az a winner off ur first try iz remarkable. Now just about every men'z shoe store I go to they alwayz have a denim dress shoe on hand ready for thoze under 30 year old club go--erz or some spike haired italian guido. O.k. o.k. I do own a couple of denim dress shoez, however I kind of got turned off by them when I saw a whole row of them in a certain store. I'm never rude when I go into theze storez but I just say to myself where iz the innovation???!!! a whole row of navy blue denim dress shoez meanz that 10 different companiez have the same idea(they were all different brandz, I checked). So during theze warmer monthz I can still maintain my cool. Man i love going to Delmonico'z, my grandmother uzed to bring me in there when i waz little to take me hat shopping. AFRICAN AMERICAN DATING IN AMERICA!!!!!

Being a young black man in america, I look at the rest of the black community like they're mentally insane when the issue of dating arisez. To me my over all philosophy iz u either love the person or u don't. No huge secret, no big big deals!! but what really boils my blood iz how the genuine feeling of love haz been taken out of the equation. It haz been replaced with straight a non sense thought pattern by both black men and women. I mean our relationship stupidity iz acted out in dozenz of T.V. showz, moviez, and even better yet on night line. I feel everybodiez prioritiez are in the wrong placez. Black women are under the notion that befor anything goez down a man must put a ring on their finger!!! but befor we even get to that point, the brotha haz to fit a check list of qualitiez that are az long az Dixwell Avenue(new haven residence know what i'm talking about). The man must have a job, he must have good credit, he must want kidz, he must be good in bed, can't live at home with hiz mama. The list goez on and on!!! Black Men are without their faultz az well. Many are stuck in the glory of yester year, still trying to hold on to their player wayz. Never wanting to grow up completly. People who take pride in having baby motherz instead of having one person who lovez u through thick and thin. The problem with both Black men and Black women iz that concept of relationship iz about self. I'm not getting any younger, I like my freedom, a whole bunch of I'z. It'z never about we or us. There iz never a comprimize. Relationshipz should be about meeting each other half way. But instead of having long term relationshipz, we're interested in having power strugglez that seperate the genderz instead of uniting us az one. People don't genuinly care about one another anymore. Most people are looking for financial security instead of love. Black Women don't want a broke man, and most men are guarding their walletz from that threat. It doezn't take a group discussion to see where we are going wrong!!!! what it takez iz laying aside all of the garbage that iz uzed to hold up progress. We can't blame thiz issue on down low brotha'z or interacial dating, blame it on stupidity!!!! Thiz iz where we need the older generation to help sit down and really guide thiz younger generation into the right direction. But the sad part iz, the majority of older generation are facing the same issuez az well. So it becomez a situation of the blind leading the blind. It scarez me that generationz of one race have failed in something that iz so simple. I'm just glad I found a person who sharez the same viewz az I do in a relationship. becauze befor I got into my current relationship, dating waz like walking on a bed of nailz. I thought all black women were crazy. But I changed my view point. I stopped looking at it az a black thing, and started looking the individual. It wazn't about a gender stereotype anymore. It wazn't about all about how big her but haz to be, or am I going to hit it! I realized it waz about finding a person that I could trust with my life. A person that haz my best interest at heart. And in return I promise to do the same. Thank God for finding true love. Nature iz cruel but we don't have to be.

Saturday my dad and I decided to go to the New Haven theater to take in the critically aclaimed play No Child. The play waz a one woman non stop action packed thought provoking performance, meant to spread humor but most of all inform the massez, through the stereotypez of inner city public schoolz. A drama teacher who took on the task of teaching acting at one of the worst inn city high schoolz in the district(most of all the worst class in the school). For many of the play attendantz (majority white suberbial typez and blackz who look down their nozez at the hood) thiz reality iz only something they'll only seen dramatized on stage or on screen. But for my dad and I it waz a reinactment of what our job waz for 9 yearz. We've worked with disadvantage kidz and most of all we live amongst them. So we know they're struggle. We know what they go through. They just attend the play, they never lived it!!! anyway, it waz seriouzly thought provoking. Specially being an educator in the inner city. It touched a 1 million subjectz, from neigborhood survival, standardized testing, and ect. It waz the first time I've heard anybody really talk about the no child left behind act and standardized testing in a negative way. Most people feel that test scorez are what makez a child. but really they just treat them az numberz and statisticz, when half the time we're lying to them telling them they're suppozed to be individualz!!!! what a contridiction.!!!! anyway, handz down the best play I ever saw!
